“Expectations today are no less than those the Church faced sixty years ago. Indeed, they have expanded and become more complex.” In Pope Leo XIV’s October 27th Apostolic Letter on education, he reminds the faithful of the very real challenges of our time while also encouraging us to respond with hope. What exactly are these challenges, though? We live in a “complex, fragmented, digitized educational environment,” according to Pope Leo, and so we need to think deeply about how to best counter these issues. While educational communities ought to “respond with creativity,” Pope Leo exhorts that educators need to “show a vision of man as the image of God, called to truth and goodness.” In a confused and chaotic world, education has the power to instill clarity and order. In these 12 discussions about the nature of education, we will dive into the most important questions of our modern day from a Catholic perspective.
Open to parents, teachers and students, these meetings will be from 6:00 to 7:30 pm in the MPR room, unless otherwise noted below, and will cover 12 topics:
The Nature of Education - January 30th
Modern vs. Classical Approach - February 27th
The Liberal Arts - March 27th
The Influence of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle - April 24th
Instilling a Desire for Truth, Goodness & Beauty in Young People - May 29th
What is Common Sense? - June 26th
Beauty, pt. 1: Sacred Music - July 31st

These meetings will put common sense at the forefront of the conversation. Common sense, according to St. Thomas Aquinas, makes use of all of the senses in order to come to an understanding of something (ST, I, q. 78, a. 4). In other words, without common sense, knowledge is impossible! As such, Catholic education trains students to use their ability to see, hear, feel, etc. so as to better know and glorify God!
*When Pope Leo issued his Oct. 27th Apostolic Letter on education, it was in honor of the 60th Anniversary of the Conciliar Declaration Gravissimum educationis, which will be the basis for Bringing Back Common Sense.
